Wegovy in Pill Form Is Taking Off Fast

Novo Nordisk launched an oral version of its weight loss drug Wegovy on January 5, 2026, and the numbers since then have been hard to ignore. In roughly five months, the pill crossed 3 million prescriptions in the U.S., a pace the company describes as one of the strongest pharmaceutical launches by volume on record. That works out to about one prescription filled every five seconds.

The first million prescriptions came in 12 weeks. The next two million came even faster, in just 10 weeks.

Why It Matters

Until now, GLP-1 drugs for obesity have only been available as injections. The Wegovy pill is the first oral option in that category. Novo had bet that a pill format would reach patients who had been reluctant to start injectable therapy, and that appears to be playing out. More than 80% of new Wegovy pill prescriptions are going to patients who had never been on a GLP-1 before.

That is significant. There are an estimated 120 million Americans who would qualify for an anti-obesity medication, but only a small fraction are actually being treated.

Price and Access

For patients paying out of pocket, the starting 1.5 mg dose costs $149 per month. Commercially insured patients using savings plans may pay as little as $25 per month. The drug is also available through Novo’s own online pharmacy and telehealth partners including LifeMD, Ro, and Hims and Hers. It is listed on the TrumpRx government purchasing portal as well.

The Competitive Picture

Novo’s main rival, Eli Lilly, launched its own oral GLP-1 drug Foundayo in early April 2026. Wegovy had a roughly three-month head start, and prescription data suggests Novo is maintaining a lead, though analysts note that telehealth referrals may be underrepresented in current tracking numbers.

For several years, Lilly’s injectable Zepbound had overtaken injectable Wegovy as the top-selling obesity drug in the U.S. The pill launch represents Novo’s attempt to reverse that dynamic, and early results suggest it is working. Wegovy led all anti-obesity medications in new patient starts over the course of 2026 so far.

The pill closed out its first quarter on the market with $355 million in revenue.
