The majority of Americans expect the Supreme Court to find the health reform law’s mandate that people purchase health insurance unconstitutional, according to a new Kaiser Family Foundation poll out this morning. Just less than a third of Americans think the Court will uphold the Affordable Care Act provision—and that number drops to 17 percent when individuals are asked about how they would personally rule on the issue.
This could explain, at least in part, why Republicans aren’t pursuing a particularly aggressive repeal agenda. They are taking on bits and pieces: The House plans to pursue, in coming weeks, a repeal vote on the CLASS Act, the long-term care insurance program that the Obama administration deemed unworkable last fall. But there’s no full-on repeal vote this session and, politically speaking, these poll results suggest that Republicans don’t need one: the Supreme Court cases have already convinced the public that the fate of the health reform law is uncertain.”
