Trump administration releases association health plan rule

Friday, February 2nd, 2018

Axios reports:

“The Department of Health and Human Services has posted its long-awaited proposed rule to make it easier to form “association health plans,” aimed at groups of workers who team up to get better deals on health insurance. Among other things, the rule would encourage these kinds of plans by removing the requirement that says associations have to have a purpose besides health insurance.

The bottom line: The rule says its goal is to help small businesses buy health coverage more easily, but the bigger question is whether they’d pull healthy people out of the Affordable Care Act exchanges.”

Making government our last resort

Tuesday, May 5th, 2015

Indiana Economic Digest reports:

“We’ve found yet another reason to mistrust a government bureaucracy that takes money citizens earned and treats citizens like serfs. The government class often act like the put upon factory foremen, whether it is making the sick wait in a line too many don’t survive trying see a physician at a Veterans Hospital or forcing the poor to jump through innumerable hoops to obtain Medicaid while hoping a loophole can be found to disqualify a person obviously in need. This last cultural trend became widespread in Indiana during Mitch Daniels’ time as governor.

BenefitsPro reports:

“2015 marks the first year that taxpayers will have to prove they have health insurance or, if they don’t, they’ll have to pay a penalty. But how is the proof presented?

About half the adult population might not know the answer to this, according to a Harris Poll commissioned by Intuit TurboTax. The TurboTax folks had Harris poll more than 2,000 adults, and 48 percent didn’t know they’ll be required to declare their health coverage status on their 2014 tax return.

Even the labor unions are souring on Obamacare

The Washington Examiner reports:

Thanks to Obamacare, labor unions are facing higher health insurance costs — as well as steeper out-of-pocket bills and wage cuts.

Consequently, these erstwhile allies of the president appear to be signing on with the majority of Americans who oppose his signature law.

Health insurance exchanges: The big unknowns

Wednesday, September 5th, 2012

American Medical News reports:

“Physicians navigating the world after health system reform are headed toward a large, uncharted area over the horizon in the form of health insurance exchanges. The coverage marketplaces will serve millions of people, but with few predecessor models to serve as guides, doctors wondering what the exchanges will be like for them are, for the most part, sailing blind.

Health insurance exchanges are scheduled to emerge by 2014, at which point individuals and small businesses will be able to shop for a variety of plan options, including coverage that might come with federal subsidies. Forming competitive marketplaces is a major way in which Affordable Care Act architects intended not only to expand coverage to tens of millions of people, but also to restrain cost growth in the system.
