Blue Cross, Advocate team up on new health insurance plan

Monday, January 11th, 2016

Crains Chicago Business Reports:

“Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Illinois and Advocate Health Care are teaming up to offer a health plan that will be one of the cheapest options the insurer offers on and off the Obamacare exchange.
The plan, called BlueCare Direct, is a marriage of two giants. Blue Cross is the largest health insurer in the state, and Downers Grove-based Advocate is the largest health care system, with 12 hospitals and more than 4,000 doctors.

The BlueCare Direct network will include 250 of Advocate’s sites of care in Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane and Will counties, including nine of its hospitals and a children’s hospital with two campuses. Enrollees can stick with their primary care doctor outside of Advocate’s system, but the plan will not cover it, said Dr. Lee Sacks, chief medical officer for Advocate.

Canadian Health Care: Patients Waiting Longer Than Ever For Treatment

Monday, January 11th, 2016

Investors Business Daily Reports:

Socialist Medicine: Canadians love their hockey and have historically been happy with their government-run health care system. Hockey is thriving. The country’s health care system, though, is a wreck and getting worse.

It could be said the words “Canada” and “health care” really don’t go together because some Canadians never make it to the doctor.

Too many die untreated due to extended wait times to see a doctor, and those wait times have increased again this year. They are now almost twice as long as they were in 1993, the year Hillary Clinton tried to force government health care on Americans. (more…)

What you need to know about Obamacare tax forms

Monday, January 11th, 2016

CBS Rports:

Tax filing is getting even more complicated. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires employers and health insurance companies to give the IRS information about your income and health insurance coverage. So, the IRS has created three new tax forms, and you’ll need them to prove you have health insurance and, therefore, aren’t required to pay any tax penalties. You’ll also need them to make a claim for tax credits you’re entitled to. (more…)

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois: 2016 Rate Filings

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois reports:

“Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) recently filed its 2016 rates with Illinois. Below are FAQs that may help you understand what this means.

Who does this affect?

The 2016 rates will affect individuals and families who bought health insurance either directly from us or Get Covered Illinois™, the Official Health Insurance Marketplace.

Will my premium increase?

It depends. It’s important to understand that rates are not the same as premiums. Rates, which affect premiums, are based on several things, like region, pharmaceutical costs, and use of insurance benefits. However, your 2016 premiums will depend on the general rates, plus the number of people on your plan, their ages, and where you live.

Are increased rates about BCBSIL making more profits?

Rates are based on our members’ health care claims in previous years. When the Marketplace opened in 2014, we began offering new plans and set rates based on new requirements and what we thought member claims would be. Now that we have a full year of member claims with the new plans, we have a better idea of our costs. These costs are also affected by region, pharmaceutical costs, and use of insurance benefits, among other things. We are adjusting our rates so that we can keep providing coverage options across the state for people who don’t have insurance through an employer.

There are consumer protections in place to limit our ability to raise premiums just to increase profits. For example, medical loss ratio (MLR) requirements require at least 80% of premiums to go to medical costs each year. If that requirement isn’t met, BCBSIL may need to give certain customers premium rebates.

When will I find out if my premium is going up? How will I be notified?

If your 2016 premium does go up, we will send you a letter in the fall to notify you.

Millions facing a hefty increase in Medicare premiums in 2016

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015

Yahoo Finance reports:

“Nearly a third of the roughly 50 million elderly Americans who depend on Medicare for their physician care and other health services could see their premiums jump by 52 percent or more next year. That’s because of a quirk in the law that punishes wealthier beneficiaries and others any time the Social Security Administration fails to boost the annual cost of living adjustment.

Will Jonathan Gruber Topple Obamacare?

Tuesday, January 13th, 2015

Politico Magazine reports:

“Why the hell did Jonathan Gruber say that? And that? And that? And (sigh) the other thing? Those are the questions on the minds of virtually everyone in the health care world—especially the people who worked the hardest on Obamacare. Ever since the videos started popping up, one after another, America has come to know Gruber—the MIT economist who worked closely on both Obamacare and Romneycare—as the guy who thinks voters are “stupid.” And the guy who thinks Obamacare was passed because of trickery. And who says, ha-ha, voters don’t understand economics. For a while, Fox News didn’t have to bother running anything else.

How the Obamacare Penalty Will Affect Your 2014 Taxes

Monday, January 12th, 2015

The Motley Fool reports:

“Ever since the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, critics have cited the penalties that the law imposes on those who don’t have qualifying healthcare coverage. Yet, with those provisions not taking effect until this year, no one has yet seen exactly how Obamacare penalties will work. As the 2014 tax season approaches, though, the IRS has started to provide some guidance on what to expect from the provisions of the Affordable Care Act, and how they’ll affect your 2014 taxes.

Benefits Selling’s 2014 Employer Survey

Friday, October 3rd, 2014

Benefits Pro reports:

“The implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has made most employers “rethink” their employee benefit offerings, including increasing employees’ share of cost even more via consumer-driven plans.

According to Benefits Selling’s 2014 Employer Survey, 70 percent of employers said PPACA has made them rethink their employee benefit offerings, compared to 30 percent who said the health care reform law hadn’t had any impact on their offerings.

Labor Unions to Pelosi, Reid: Obamacare Healthcare Reform Hurts Us Too

Friday, July 19th, 2013

The Washington Free Beacon reports:

“Three major unions wrote a letter to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) asking them to fix major flaws in Obamacare that “will destroy the very health and wellbeing of our members,” the Wall Street Journal reported.

The letter, sent on Friday by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, a hotel workers union, and a food workers union, notes the unions’ strong support for Democrats, but argues that the Obama administration’s signature accomplishment will devastate them.
