Get Ready for Enrollment in Health Exchanges

“In about six weeks, Americans will have a new kind of open enrollment to consider.

Starting Oct. 1, people without health insurance can sign up for standardized coverage through new health-insurance marketplaces run either by their state, the federal government or a combination of the two—the centerpiece of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

“With full implementation of Obamacare looming – delays in the employer mandate aside – many in the HR world have been wondering whether health care reform will render COBRA obsolete.

The short answer: yes – and no.

While the new law has no direct impact to the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, the indirect effects of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act could eventually render COBRA meaningless.

Employees Seek More Voluntary Benefits

“A new MetLife study found that while most employers are not cutting back on employee benefits, they are largely not increasing the available benefits even as employees say they would be willing to pay more for those benefits.

In Westchester, though, business advocates and representatives of employee-benefits services say there has been a “tremendous increase” in the number of firms looking into and implementing voluntary benefits for their employees.
