Friday, March 24th, 2017

Yahoo Finance reports:

“Dr. Bryan Hill spent his career working as a pediatrician, teaching at a university, and working at a hospital. But in March 2016, he decided he no longer wanted a boss.

He took some time off, then one day he got a call asking if he’d be up for doing a house call for a woman whose son was sick. He agreed, and by the end of that visit, he realized he wanted to treat patients without dealing with any of the insurance requirements.

4 Surprising Things Medicare Doesn’t Cover (and How You Can Pay for Them)

Wednesday, March 8th, 2017

The Motley Fool reports:

“Medicare covers more than 54 million beneficiaries, around 77% of whom are happy with their insurance. Yet this vital social program doesn’t cover every single beneficiary’s needs. If you’re covered by Medicare, or will be soon, it’s important to understand both its benefits and its limitations.

Medicare Part A pays for inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing care, hospice care, and home healthcare. Part B covers 80% of most routine care, but many Medicare recipients eventually experience a health need Medicare won’t cover. It helps to know what kinds of things Medicare won’t pay for and plan ahead for costs.

New Data Brief Finds Physician Shortages Lead to Network Adequacy Challenges

Wednesday, July 20th, 2016

AHIP reports:

“States are facing a shortage of physicians in primary care, psychiatry, obstetrics and gynecology, and general surgery, according to a new AHIP data brief. This analysis looked at the ratio of these physicians to the population and found several U.S. states currently have physician supply rates that fall well below the national average.

According to the data brief, these provider shortfalls may be even more severe in rural areas. While close to a quarter of Americans live in rural areas, only 10 percent of physicians practice in those geographies. For example, most surgeons in Idaho are practicing in urban areas (25 per 100,000 urban population) rather than in rural areas (14 per 100,000 rural population).

Blue Cross, Advocate team up on new health insurance plan

Monday, January 11th, 2016

Crains Chicago Business Reports:

“Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Illinois and Advocate Health Care are teaming up to offer a health plan that will be one of the cheapest options the insurer offers on and off the Obamacare exchange.
The plan, called BlueCare Direct, is a marriage of two giants. Blue Cross is the largest health insurer in the state, and Downers Grove-based Advocate is the largest health care system, with 12 hospitals and more than 4,000 doctors.

The BlueCare Direct network will include 250 of Advocate’s sites of care in Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane and Will counties, including nine of its hospitals and a children’s hospital with two campuses. Enrollees can stick with their primary care doctor outside of Advocate’s system, but the plan will not cover it, said Dr. Lee Sacks, chief medical officer for Advocate.

Canadian Health Care: Patients Waiting Longer Than Ever For Treatment

Monday, January 11th, 2016

Investors Business Daily Reports:

Socialist Medicine: Canadians love their hockey and have historically been happy with their government-run health care system. Hockey is thriving. The country’s health care system, though, is a wreck and getting worse.

It could be said the words “Canada” and “health care” really don’t go together because some Canadians never make it to the doctor.

Too many die untreated due to extended wait times to see a doctor, and those wait times have increased again this year. They are now almost twice as long as they were in 1993, the year Hillary Clinton tried to force government health care on Americans. (more…)
