How Obamacare Makes Tax Filing Trickier

Thursday, April 21st, 2016

According to Time Inc.

“Many Americans will get new tax forms for the first time. Here’s what to do with them.

This year, you may be receiving tax forms you’ve never seen before, all thanks to the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare. For the most part, these documents won’t make tax filing too much harder—with one big exception. Here’s what you need to know about this paperwork, depending on what kind of health insurance you had in 2015.

If you had health insurance from your employer all year…

Blue Cross, Advocate team up on new health insurance plan

Monday, January 11th, 2016

Crains Chicago Business Reports:

“Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Illinois and Advocate Health Care are teaming up to offer a health plan that will be one of the cheapest options the insurer offers on and off the Obamacare exchange.
The plan, called BlueCare Direct, is a marriage of two giants. Blue Cross is the largest health insurer in the state, and Downers Grove-based Advocate is the largest health care system, with 12 hospitals and more than 4,000 doctors.

The BlueCare Direct network will include 250 of Advocate’s sites of care in Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane and Will counties, including nine of its hospitals and a children’s hospital with two campuses. Enrollees can stick with their primary care doctor outside of Advocate’s system, but the plan will not cover it, said Dr. Lee Sacks, chief medical officer for Advocate.

The ‘Affordable’ Care Act, another Christmas bah-humbug

Monday, January 11th, 2016

The Hill Reports:

“‘Tis the season for giving—and for the Affordable Care Act, it’s become the season for giving bad news. For the third year in a row, open enrollment has given millions of hardworking Americans news that their health insurance will have higher premiums, fewer choices, and more out-of-pocket costs—if their insurance will even exist after the holidays are over.

From President Obama to Hillary Clinton to many candidates for both the U.S. Senate and House, politicians are claiming the law is a smashing success. This might make for a good stump speech for the base, but these claims carry huge political risks: They sound woefully disconnected from the struggles millions of Americans are suffering under this law.

CBS Rports:

Tax filing is getting even more complicated. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires employers and health insurance companies to give the IRS information about your income and health insurance coverage. So, the IRS has created three new tax forms, and you’ll need them to prove you have health insurance and, therefore, aren’t required to pay any tax penalties. You’ll also need them to make a claim for tax credits you’re entitled to. (more…)

The risk in rushing an Illinois health exchange

Wednesday, December 17th, 2014

The Chicago Tribune reports:

“Tns of thousands of Illinois residents will sign up for coverage under Obamacare over the next few months. Many of them wouldn’t be able to afford the insurance without a federal subsidy to help pay the premiums.

Those subsidies, however, are in jeopardy because the Affordable Care Act was poorly, hastily written. The U.S. Supreme Court will decide next year whether the subsidies are legal in Illinois and many other states that use HealthCare.gov, the federal Obamacare website.

However, CEO Mark Bertolini told CNBC that while people may be worried that health-care costs will increase now that the economy is improving and will become an industry trend, he’s not.
