Kaiser Health News reports:
“As Democratic presidential primary candidates try to walk a political tightrope between the party’s progressive and center-left wings, they face increasing pressure to outline the details of their health reform proposals.
On Wednesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) reaffirmed his stance by reintroducing a “Medicare-for-all” bill, the idea that fueled his 2016 presidential run.

The Chicago Suntimes reports:
“The potential for Senate Republicans to unravel Obamacare this week diminished on Sunday, when two GOP senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Ted Cruz of Texas said their support was unlikely.
Even though the bill drafted by Sens. Lindsey Graham R-S.C. and Bill Cassidy R-La., is on the verge of failure — and may not even get a vote by the end of the month — as long as Republicans control the House, Senate and the White House, attempts may continue to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, former President Barack Obama’s signature health insurance plan.

Yahoo Finance reports:
“Republicans have only one month to pass legislation to repeal and replace Obamacare through the process by which they tried and failed earlier this summer.
According to a Friday ruling from the Senate parliamentarian, the window to pass an Obamacare-repeal bill through the process known as budget reconciliation will close at the end of September.

Modern Helthcare.com reports:
“Employer and business groups are shifting their lobbying efforts from repealing the Affordable Care Act’s unpopular “Cadillac” tax to fighting GOP proposals to chip away at the tax break on employer-provided health insurance.
Capping the tax break, they say, would cause employers to offer skimpier benefits, and some would stop offering coverage altogether. That would erode the employer-sponsored health insurance market.

The Hill Reports:
“‘Tis the season for giving—and for the Affordable Care Act, it’s become the season for giving bad news. For the third year in a row, open enrollment has given millions of hardworking Americans news that their health insurance will have higher premiums, fewer choices, and more out-of-pocket costs—if their insurance will even exist after the holidays are over.
But this sad reality won’t be found in the flowery rhetoric of the law’s supporters. From President Obama to Hillary Clinton to many candidates for both the U.S. Senate and House, politicians are claiming the law is a smashing success. This might make for a good stump speech for the base, but these claims carry huge political risks: They sound woefully disconnected from the struggles millions of Americans are suffering under this law.

Benefits Pro reports:
“A funding mechanism included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Actis gaining steam in the House of Representatives, leading to a round of huzzahs from the small business community.
Because affordable care for all will only be affordable if someone underwrites its true cost, the law includes various taxes and assessments designed to sustain the insurers that offer low-premium coverage. Among them: The Health Insurance Tax, targeting small businesses.

Kaiser Health News reports:
“Elizabeth and Britt Harmon struggled for years to have a child, and were thrilled when their son Orin was born in February 2013. But they were unprepared for the medical problems that then upended the Brooksville, Maine couple’s lives.
Orin was born with pulmonary stenosis, a heart condition, and severe asthma. He required constant care, including frequent trips to the hospital and medications that cost hundreds of dollars. The Harmons had insurance through Britt’s job at a plumbing company, but it covered “maybe half” of their child’s medical expenses, Elizabeth said.

The Motley Fool reports:
“Ever since the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, critics have cited the penalties that the law imposes on those who don’t have qualifying healthcare coverage. Yet, with those provisions not taking effect until this year, no one has yet seen exactly how Obamacare penalties will work. As the 2014 tax season approaches, though, the IRS has started to provide some guidance on what to expect from the provisions of the Affordable Care Act, and how they’ll affect your 2014 taxes.

Yahoo Finance reports:
“Tens of millions of Americans without health insurance risk being fined by the IRS as part of the Affordable Care Act, which imposes a tax penalty on those who didn’t purchase medical insurance. But tax experts say up to 20 million people are eligible for a waiver.
According to Inuit, maker of TurboTax, there are 30 reasons you may be exempt from the tax penalty if you don’t have health insurance. These are the top reasons for a tax exemption:
- Affordability . The lowest-priced health insurance available would cost more than 8 percent of your household income.
- Medical expenses . You had medical expenses you couldn’t afford to pay in the last 24 months, which resulted in significant debt.
- Cancellation . You had insurance that was canceled, and the other plans were unaffordable.
- Utility shut-off . You received a notice for shut-off from a utility company.
- Difficulty signing up . You had issues signing up through your state or federal marketplace.
